About Us

The Active Life Centre @Coxhoe is managed by local community group - Future Leisure in Coxhoe (FLiC).  Our mission is to be a ‘community hub’ and to take a lead role in the development of new and improved sport, fitness, educational and social activities for the improvement of health and well being of the community.

The Centre has a fully equipped Fitness Centre with an assortment of cardiovascular and resistance equipment, and a separate weights only room with a mixture of free and fixed weights. The centre now has a brand new Dance and Group Exercise Studio where we offer a variety of group exercise classes of all types to suit your fitness needs including Fitsteps, Body Balance and Combat classes, Pilates and Easy Aerobics.  Our Active Life Circuit class is suitable for GP exercise referral participants and those new to exercise.

We have introduced X-Biking and a Virtual Group Cycling Studio to the centre's ever expanding programmes.  See our Classes page for more info on this exciting venture funded by East Durham LEADER.

The large Sports Hall is available for 5-a-side football, badminton and basketball.  We offer space and activities for children’s birthday parties, including the popular ‘Menace’ bouncy castle.  Our outdoor, floodlit 3G pitch is available for 5-a-side football games and training.

Fully qualified friendly staff are here to support you and help you achieve your goals.  We work closely with various other groups and local businesses to provide support in the Coxhoe and area community.

You must consider us as a Special Events Venue for your next function.  We cater for weddings, parties and functions from small to large, with our beautiful new affordable venue featuring a licensed bar and our new indoor marquee. We can arrange catering, table and room decorations, and more.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

The Story
In early 2011, Durham County Council earmarked the Centre (known then as Coxhoe Leisure Centre) for closure and as a result the local community launched a campaign to save the centre.  Local residents formed an action group in partnership with the people of the community and produced a Business Plan.  The application to save the centre from closure was accepted by Durham County Council and in November 2011the group was granted charitable status and started managing the centre.  The name of the charity that manages the Active Life Centre @Coxhoe is Future Leisure in Coxhoe (FLiC). Registered Charity Number 1145037

FLiC is comprised of eight Directors, all of whom manage the charity on a voluntary basis.  The Directors have a wide range of skills and experience including Sports Centre Management, Budget Control, Human Resources, Legal, Community Development, and Building Management.

Our Vision
To be a ‘community hub’ and to take a lead role in the development of new and improved sport, fitness, educational and social activities for the improvement of health and wellbeing of the community.

Plans for the Future
We have already begun to re-structure how the centre is operated to be a COMMUNITY FOCUSED ORGANISATION with emphasis on positive activities for all ages and abilities.  This includes offering sporting and social activities, supporting local clubs and groups, community health improvement, activities for older adults, holiday clubs for children and youth, and much more.

We re-invest 100% of any surplus income into the centre.

Our Facility
The Active Life Centre @Coxhoe is located within the East Durham Rural Corridor Area Action Partnership.  The AAP area contains the following town and parish councils; Cassop-Cum-Quarrington, Coxhoe, Kelloe, Sedgefield, Fishburn, Trimdon, Bradbury and Mordon.

The centre is located within Coxhoe Park which is still maintained and managed by Durham County Council.  A local community group - Coxhoe Community Partnership - worked with the local authority to develop the park. The community partnership has provided support by fundraising, obtaining grants garden, wildlife pond, Willow Wisp conservation area.
